Undoubtedly one of the most famous and best waterfalls in South India, Abbey Falls cascades from a height of 70 feet into a mighty and thunderous splash. Named by the British as Jessy Waterfalls in the memory of Madikeri first British Captain chaplain’s daughter, today Abbey falls is one of the best places to visit in Coorg.

Located at a distance of 10 km from Coorg’s main town of Madikeri, you can reach the entrance of the falls after a 30-minute car drive. Situated in the middle of coffee plantations and spice estates, the Abbey Falls is a small 10-minute trek from the entrance.

Numerous small streams and ample rainfall combine to form the Abbey Waterfalls which further flows to unite with the River Kaveri.

A hanging bridge has been built across the gorge here, from where you can get a beautiful view of the falls. A walk across the bridge and you’ll see a Kali Mata temple where a number of tourists come to venerate each time.

When elephants became unemployed after the wood cutting and logging operations were ceased by the Karnataka government, they decided to use these mighty animals as a message to the people.

Today there are over 150 elephants in different camps across Karnataka giving visitors a true and enriching experience with every minute spent with them. There are a host of activities to get to knows these mammals better, like feeding the elephants with ragi, jaggery, sugarcane, banana, and coconuts.

You can also watch elephants being given a scrub-bath in the river and how oil is applied on their forehead, tusks etc. You can also opt for an elephant ride to the Dubare Reserve Forest where you can watch the traditional howdah (elephant carriage) being tied, after which if you’re lucky enough you may encounter animals like the gaur, leopard, the wild dog, sloth bear, peacock, partridges, etc.

Located at a distance of 29 km from Madikeri, the camp offers various activities like trekking, elephant rides, coracle ride, bird watching, fishing, river rafting as well options for accommodation like jungle lodges and resorts.

The Camp is open throughout the year. Monsoons (July to mid-September) are heavy, but the swollen river makes it all the more interesting for monsoon river rafting.

Mallalli Falls

Located at the foothills of Pushpagiri in the Western Ghats region of Coorg, it is 25 km away from Somwarpet town and 265 km from Bangalore. This waterfall cascades majestically down a height of 200 feet making it one of the tallest falls in South India and also one of the most beautiful waterfalls located in Coorg (some say, even better than Abbey Falls).

It later flows through Kukke Subrahmanya and merges with the Netravati River -the lifeline of Mangalore - at Uppinangadi. The surrounding of the waterfall provides a spectacular view of the green forest, valleys and mountain ranges while the Pushpagiri foothills act as a starting point for many trekking adventures right up to the top of the falls or even jungle trekking to the other peaks in Bangalore.

From Somvarpet there are very few buses to Kamaralli, which is the nearest village to Mallalli falls. Hiring a private vehicle is a better way to reach Mallalli Falls.

You have to take a deviation at Hanchinal which comes 2 km before Bedalli when travelling from Somwarpet. From there on, it's a bumpy jeep track for 2 to 3 km. And then a walk for almost a kilometre. There are no shops/restaurants near the falls so it is always better to carry food.

The best time to visit Mallalli Falls is during July to December during the monsoons and early winters when the water rises and thunders down at full volume.AA

Barpole River Rafting

Located in a mountainous region, Coorg is one of the best locations for whitewater rafting south of the Vindhyas. With the turbulent flow of the Kithu Kakathu river in Coorg along its route through the Brahmagiri hills and finally meeting the Arabian sea in Kerala, the river challenges you at each toss and turn. Barapole is the more dangerous and appropriate stretch for river rafting with nice class 2 and class 4 rapids.

With dangerous rapids like Morning Coffee, Grasshopper, Wicked Witch, Milky Churn, Frame Head and Big Bang, the entire rafting session of about 4 km takes 3 hours to complete. The rafters are trained thoroughly by professionals before beginning the journey, where they are completely familiarised with the equipment, made comfortable with the force of the water and also made to practice different rescue techniques.

The stretch of the river as it courses through Poonya coffee estate is especially turbulent and has a class 4 rapid. With the dense forest on the banks, you should be prepared to encounter spiders, leeches, and snakes in the course of the trip. The stretch of rapids ends just before the river enters the Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary and finally, your mind has calmed down and the feeling extreme pride fills you.

Coffee Plantation Visit

Being the largest producer of coffee in India, Coorg is blessed with the best and purest quality of coffee beans. With vast acres and plantation of Arabica and Robusta coffee, Coorg boasts an unspoiled and fertile terrain with the best flavours and aromas floating through the air. Visiting this place is one of the best things to do in Coorg.

There are many different coffee estates in Coorg, some are owned by established companies like TATA coffee which then caters to Starbucks, while most others are owned by the ever welcoming Kodagu people. To get a real feel of the plantations, pick a homestay set right in the midst of a plantation. Wake up each morning to a walk through the coffee plants, you’ll be surprised to find so many other fruits and spices growing there like pepper, cardamom, vanilla pods, cumin seeds, banana plants, sugarcane, bamboo as well as tea plantations along the slopes.

Take a jeep ride or walk through the slopes along with a local and learn about the history of the plantation and the people there, but beware of elephants that walk these slopes and stay out of their way. If you’re lucky to visit during the berry picking season, you’ll be able to help out and experience the place in the truest sense of being a Coorgi.

Nishani Motte Trek

In the Talacauvery Wildlife sanctuary of Karnataka lies the peak of Nishani Motte. It is one of the lesser-known peaks in Coorg and hence is unspoiled and even more inviting to an adventure junkie. The scenic and exciting trail commences in the dense Shola forests and meadows and continues all the way up the summit adjoining a remarkable ridge walk and multiple other challenges along the way.

The entire trip generally takes two days to complete as once you reach the summit you have to camp out in the forest at the anti-poaching site. The climb to the top is exhausting as well as exhilarating. Trekking up Nishani Motte can be a real challenge, there are steep ascends, thousands of leeches and if it rains then god bless the weight of your backpack as you keep climbing.

Although it is a moderate level trek, it requires a great amount of perseverance to reach the summit.  The Nishani Motte trek is a perfect combination of trekking and camping that makes it an exciting getaway in Bangalore with your Squad.

Things to Carry

Pack light when travelling to any place, the less you have to carry, the more you can explore and move around the place. Carry only the necessities as extra baggage and valuables will only make you cautious and worried about keeping it always in a safe place. Since Coorg is a hill station, the weather there can get really cold especially during the night. Also you will definitely indulge in some adventure activities throughout your stay. Below is a list of few essentials you must carry when travelling from Bangalore to Coorg.

- If you decide to go trekking or camping in Coorg to any of the peaks, it’s a strenuous and exhausting journey so things to keep your energy up like energy drinks, protein bars are essential.

- Not everyone is strong to battle these physical challenges so medicines for stomach upset, headaches, spray for body aches, tablets for vomiting, an antiseptic liquid or ointment for injuries any other medical condition treatment that you think you might need. You might not end up taking any medication, but prevention is always better than cure.

- Apart from medicines trekking has other challenges as well like insect bites, leeches as well as dehydration along the journey which many people don’t really take into account. So make sure you take along, bug or insect repellent, salt for the leeches and oral rehydration salts (ORS) in case of dehydration. Other trekking essentials include, torch, sleeping bag, tent(if camping), plenty of water, light food, sanitary essentials and a map or guide of the area incase you stray away from the group.

- If you’re travelling during the monsoons making sure to carry mosquito repellent or lemongrass oil which is a brilliant solution to keep those blood suckers away.

- While packing your clothes, take into account the duration of your stay and pack accordingly. Try and avoid carrying too much extra clothing as it will only increase the weight on you while travelling. Also pack clothing as per the weather condition, if you’re visiting Coorg in the summer, carry cotton clothes, if it’s in the winters make sure you carry warm clothes as temperatures at night get really chilly.

- For the monsoon visitors, also warm clothes are advised, along with a raincoat/jacket and an umbrella. What people may normally neglect are shoes, but It is very important to carry at least 2 pairs of good travelling shoes as feet can get infected due to prolonged soaking in the rain which can be fatal and ruin your experience of travelling and of the place itself.

- Living in the age of technology it is hard to stay away from the electronic gadget. So a handy mobile phone with a good camera, earphones, a DSLR camera for the shutterbugs, a charger, laptop if necessary, a power bank and an extra memory card if need be.

- For those who want to enjoy the true essence of village life and peace of mind, just a mobile phone would do the trick. Do not forget to carry ziplock plastic covers to protect your gadgets incase of rain.

- Identification proof and enough money for your trip. Try and not carry all your money in cash, instead, keep withdrawing as and when you might need.

- The last and the most important, always carry some amount of food and water with you, a bottle of water, a biscuit pack or even a fruit would do.

So here are a few things to keep in mind. Happy packing :)

Travel Tips for Coorg Trip from Bangalore

Travelling from Bangalore to Coorg can be an exhausting journey especially you are driving down. It’s a beautiful place where you’ll make unforgettable memories and see nature in its full glory. Here are a few tips to help you along your journey and during your stay, so you will be prepared for the journey ahead.

- If you’re travelling by bus from Bangalore, keep in mind that you’ll arrive early in the morning so make sure you’ve booked a hotel or homestay in Coorg in advance, else you’ll have to rely on the taxi drivers or wait for a few hours till the morning sets in and the town is better to get around.

- If you’re travelling by flight, be sure to read about the taxi rentals and so that you may not be fleeced and get a reasonable Bangalore to Coorg package.

- If you plan to drive, you need to be careful about a lot of things, since you’re entirely responsible for the journey. So get your vehicle checked and serviced, keep in a spare tyre and the essential tools in case of a puncture and carry your car related documents before you set out.

- Start your journey as early as possible to cover up as much distance before the heat and traffic sets in. Break your journey twice or thrice to keep your mind refreshed with a meal and some chai maybe. Ask the locals for good food joints and try out the best even along your journey.

- Do not drive fast as the exhaustion of a long journey might tire you out to and speed breakers or even wild animals that Coorg is famous for might go unnoticed. So drive safe and save your life as well as any roadside animals. It is advisable to drive in turns, so travel usually with another friend who can drive as well.

- On reaching Coorg, make the best of every minute there. Set out in the mornings and try and cover up as much sightseeing during the day, since most of the tourist attractions close by 6 pm.

- Visit each of the falls with a good pair of trekking shoes, especially during the monsoon as the ground can get really slippery.

- Make sure you read a bit about the tourist attractions before visiting them, so that your trip is not futile. For example, the Madikeri Fort is closed on Monday.

- Carry enough water and food if you plan to camp or trek to any of the peaks.

- Nights can get cold and windy on the peak and it's important to carry strong tents as well as a warm set of clothes in case you plan to camp overnight.

- Make sure you are physically and mentally fit before attempting any of the adventure activities, especially river rafting in Coorg which can be really dangerous.

That’s all for now, have a safe trip and keep these tips in mind. Coorg is waiting to be explored, go get there...

Excellent
It was an stunning experience for me as solo traveler. Location is in 16 km cut from Madikeri towards Talakaveri and last 3 km pathway is very much into the forest and you will be enjoying that. Location is untapped by many and road in the last stretch is not so comfortable and that is the beauty of the place. The place is very much into the forest and you wont here any sound other than birds, leaves and wind. No Wifi and Network is very weak and that's exactly what we need when we are in holidays. Temperature is damn low at night and camp fire sets the mood for it to enjoy. Tent sleep is a different experience for me and i am sure it would be the same for all. Water stream flows nearby and we can go and pass time there. Morning, we walked around 2 Km into the forest to see a jungle falls which is icing on the cake. Trekking path is also untouched by many i believe. Also you can coffee estate to walk around. No need to mention that food is very delicious and so are services. On a whole, I am sure it would be a complete package for a camp day or two. if it is Coorg, this should be your stay place. I landed at thrillophilia accidentally and it is a needed one. If i want to say in Rajini style, "Magizhchi"

Located away from the noise and the crowded town of Virajpet- just 9 kms away. In middle of a plantation with quiet walks around. A place to chill. If you are looking for activities, you need to book outside of the place. Self sufficient within itself with a quaint cottages and deck rooms- clean bathrooms. Food was excellent made by Anand. As the caretaker -he was hospitality personified. chilled out place. Requires the approach road to be done up. And some touch ups getting done. Should have your own vehicle. But I recommend the place
